S-SMP
About this component
The S-SMP is an independent 8-bit processor that runs sound code uploaded by the game into the 64 KB audio RAM, and drives the S-DSP, which mixes eight ADPCM sample channels at 32 kHz. The main CPU only talks to it through four I/O ports. On early consoles the whole audio section sits on a detachable SHVC-SOUND daughterboard; later boards integrate it and eventually merge it into the S-APU. No sound or distorted sound is more often caused by the DAC, amplifier or audio RAM than by the S-SMP itself. Part variants: Separate S-SMP and S-DSP on earlier boards (on the SHVC-SOUND module on SHVC-CPU-01). SNS-CPU-APU-01 and later merge S-SMP, S-DSP and audio RAM into the single S-APU.
