About this component
The Wii U's 2 GB of main memory is four 512 MB DDR3 chips, each x16, giving a 64-bit bus and 12.8 GB/s in total. Half of the 2 GB is reserved for the system software. The chips are 96-ball FBGAs next to the MCM; one bad chip or cracked ball can cause boot failures or random crashes. Replacements must match the organisation (256M x 16) and speed grade. Part variants: Four 4 Gbit chips. iFixit's unit had Micron MT41K256M16HA-125 (marking D9PXV); AnandTech's teardown unit had SK Hynix H5TQ4G63MFR-12C. Other vendors may appear.
