About this component

Main memory is 4.5 MB of base RDRAM on a 9-bit Rambus bus, of which the ninth bit is used only by the RCP, so games see 4 MB. It is shared by the CPU and RCP. The Expansion Pak adds another 4.5 MB, and if neither it nor the Jumper Pak is fitted the bus is unterminated and the console will not boot, which is a common 'dead console' cause. Board revisions differ in whether the memory is two chips or one. Part variants: Earlier boards use two 18 Mbit chips (NEC uPD488170L, e.g. PD488170LVN-A50, sometimes Nintendo-branded RDRAM18-NUS). Later boards use a single 36 Mbit chip (RDRAM36-NUS). Toshiba TC59R1809 is listed as pin-compatible.

What it does on this board

4MB Rambus DRAM (8MB with Expansion Pak).
