About this component
The 68000 runs game logic from the cartridge P-ROMs and the BIOS, with 64 KB of work RAM, and controls the video chipset and the Z80 sound side. On the AES it is a second-source CMOS part (e.g. Hitachi HD68HC000). Cartridge connector contact problems are far more common than CPU failures and give similar symptoms, so clean and reseat first. Part variants: Second-source 68000s are used; Wikipedia names the Hitachi HD68HC000PS12 as the initial chip, with Toshiba or Hitachi parts usual.
