About this component

This chip does almost everything in the PSP: the Allegrex CPU runs games (1–333 MHz, capped at 222 MHz for early titles), the Media Engine decodes video and audio, and the GPU uses 2 MB of embedded memory. Its Tachyon version number identifies the board revision, which matters for custom firmware compatibility. On the PSP-1000 the main DDR is a separate chip; from the PSP-2000 it is inside the SoC package. Part variants: CXD2962GG is pictured on psdevwiki's Tachyon page (PSP-1000 era). PSP-2000 and later use revised Tachyon chips with the main RAM inside the package; their part numbers were not confirmed.

What it does on this board

32-bit MIPS CPU (up to 333MHz) with integrated GPU and media engine.
