About this component
Regulates the barrel-jack or VIN supply down to 5 V for both MCUs and the 5V header pin; it is not used when running from USB. As a linear regulator it turns the extra voltage into heat, so a 12 V input with a heavy 5 V load can make it run hot or shut down. A shorted regulator is a common result of feeding too much voltage or back-feeding 5 V. Arduino's documentation calls it IC1.
What it does on this board
Regulates the input voltage to 5V.
