MB8416A-15
About this component
This 2 KB SRAM is the only general-purpose RAM the CPU has; games keep their variables and stack here. The mainboard carries two of these chips, one on the CPU bus and one on the PPU bus for nametables. A failed work RAM usually gives a black or frozen screen, while a failed VRAM gives scrambled backgrounds. Any 2K x 8 6116-class SRAM of 150 ns or faster with the same footprint can replace it, but check whether the board is drilled for the 0.3-inch or 0.6-inch DIP width. Part variants: NES-CPU-07 uses two Fujitsu MB8416A-15 (one for work RAM, one for nametable VRAM). Other NES-001 boards use Sharp LH5116-15 (0.6-inch DIP); some boards use 0.3-inch 6116-type parts.
2KB of CPU work RAM.
