These chips surround the APU and hold everything: game code, textures and the OS reservation (games get about 5 GB). On the launch CUH-10xx board iFixit found Samsung 4 Gb chips, so 16 are needed for 8 GB, split across both sides of the board. A separate 256 MB DDR3 chip serves the south bridge's standby processor. Part variants: K4G41325FC-HC03 (4 Gb, 16 chips) on CUH-10xx per iFixit. psdevwiki also lists K4G80325FB-HC03/HC28 (8 Gb), Micron D9SSX / MT51K256M32HF-70:A, D9WDH and SK Hynix H5GC8H24AJR-R2C for other PS4 boards without mapping them; later boards use eight 8 Gb chips.
