U3
Sony IOP
I/O
I/O processor
About this component
The IOP handles the slower peripherals and passes data to the Emotion Engine. Because it is essentially a PlayStation CPU, it also runs PS1 games. From the SCPH-75000 boards Sony replaced it with a PowerPC 'Deckard' processor that emulates the old IOP, which slightly changed PS1/PS2 compatibility on those units. Part variants: Original boards use a MIPS R3000A-class IOP with 2 MB EDO RAM; from SCPH-7500x the IOP is replaced by a PowerPC-based 'Deckard' chip with 4 MB SDRAM that emulates it.
What it does on this board
Handles I/O and PS1 backwards compatibility (a PS1-class CPU).
